Results Day 2020

Supporting our students during this time is our immediate priority.

Having its strongest cohort yet, this year, NewVIc once again has achieved fantastic results despite national downgrading.

The overall A Level pass and equivalent Vocational pass rate remained very high at 98%, with more students achieving A* - B grades at A Level.

Students achieved most highly in STEM subjects, with the highest number of A* and A grade achieved in Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Further Maths, Maths, Sociology, Psychology and Spanish.  100% of students achieved A* - C in Further Maths and Spanish.  Over 70% of students achieved A* - C in Chemistry, Economics, Philosophy, Psychology.

More than 50% of students on our vocational courses achieved a Triple Distinction or higher. Vocational students also achieved most highly in STEM courses, with more than 80% of students achieved Triple Distinction in Construction and the Built Environment and Computer Science.

The achievement rate for Subsidiary Diplomas remained largely the same as last year with 60% of students achieving a Distinction *. Pass rates for the Diploma in Child Care and Diploma in Financial Services also remained high at 94%.

Despite these amazing results over 300 Vocational and A Level students had their results downgraded.

Update on final grades

On Monday 17 August, the Government made an announcement to scrap the algorithm that saw many students' results downgraded.  A Level students' final results will now be the centre assessed grades that were submitted to awarding bodies by schools and colleges.

We are awaiting further information on how this will work. As soon as we have this, we will update you. We understand how stressful the last few days have been and wanted to reassure you that we will continue to do all we can to support you.

Mandeep Gill, Principal and Chief Executive said of the results:

I’d like to thank the staff and students for their resilience, determination and hard work during these unprecedented times which has led to some truly brilliant results. However, a large proportion, 96%, of Sixth Form Colleges have seen the results they submitted downgraded. Most colleges report the grades that have been awarded are much lower than those that were submitted. Here at NewVIc we have seen the same trend.

As a college we are very angry with this situation and are working closely with SFCA (Sixth Form Colleges Association) and others at a national level to challenge the Government on this decision.  Our students were set to achieve higher than what they were awarded.  It is simply unjust, they have suffered enough as a result of this pandemic.

With all this going on our immediate priority is supporting our students with their progression.

Chair of Governors Martin Rosner said of the decision to downgrade the results:

I’d like to congratulate the students on some truly exceptional outcomes. However, the numbers of grades that have been downgraded at NewVIc and nationally are simply unbelievable.  This suggests incompetence or worse at the highest possible level.

Three criteria were supposed to be used to determine grades: teacher assessment; three year trends and prior attainment. Against all of these factors, NewVIc students should have done significantly better than last year. Instead, the results are broadly the same.

These outcomes might directly affect the life chances of our highly committed and dedicated students.

We demand immediate action to put things right, perhaps along the lines of our Scottish colleagues, and then carry out an enquiry why this has turned out so badly.
