Priyam
Priyam is a first-year vocational Level 3 student studying Business Studies. He was a former St Bonaventure’s student. Priyam is currently working with Vistry Partnerships in Stratford on the NewVIc Professionals Programme alongside his vocational course. We caught up with Priyam to find out a little more about his journey so far.
What made you choose NewVIc?
I chose NewVIc after applying for a few sixth forms and colleges. I was initially worried about my GCSE grades not meeting the entry requirements for the course. I joined the virtual open day, NewVIc Summer Induction and interviews via telephone due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I was able to get a real good sense of the college and what it could offer me in terms of meeting my future goals. I know I made the right decision for me to study at NewVIc once I was made an offer and accepted.
How have you found sixth form so far?
I was nervous for the first few days. After a few weeks I was able to adapt how we are all learning with changes brought by the pandemic. The first few weeks I was introduced to the college, environment, enrichment and sports and support services available to students. We then moved to remote learning from home after government announcements. Learning online hasn’t been the same as sitting next to your fellow college students and working together in the classroom. I’m really looking forward to returning to the college site and learning in class again.
How is you work placement with Vistry Partnership?
As part of the NewVIc Professionals Programme I am working with Vistry Partnership in Stratford. Vistry Partnerships are allowing me to grow and develop whilst I am still learning at NewVIc, enabling me to gain better prospects for my future career. The work experience will benefit me in the future and show future employers my skills and experiences achieved. I have gained some great insights to working life in an office and my confidence and skills are growing daily. It is also great to know that my work at Vistry Partnerships is making a positive impact on my manager’s outcomes.
Is there anything you wish you had known that you do now?
I didn’t know how the NewVIc Professionals Programme would open a range of opportunities that I can apply for in the future. The highly technical Professionals Programme mimics the structure and learning of the new T Level qualifications, a combination of a Level 3 National Diploma with hours of intensive industry placements. Having attended the lessons in the first term, I have got a strong insight into how things work and what grades I should achieve in order to get into a degree apprenticeship.
Who is the most inspiring person you have ever met?
There are a few, mainly the teachers at NewVIc. It has been a pleasure so far to work with my teachers in college and virtually. I also found my training manager, Thomas Paul at Vistry Partnerships another inspiration. His continuous support and guidance has allowed to grow and develop with the company. I am so grateful for the opportunities offered by NewVIc and Vistry Partnerships working together, and enabling lots of Newham and East London students to learn and discover more.
What is your advice for students considering NewVIc?
NewVIc is a great college with so many opportunities to offer to students. The college helps you reach your true potential which has a positive impact for your future. I recommend anyone considering NewVIc to look into all the unique options that are available here.
So what’s next?
I’m going to focus on my course and get involved in lots of extra curricular activities that boost my overall student experience. I have always planned to go to university once I complete college, however and am determined to pursue a degree apprenticeship that I’m hoping for and to make my family and friends very proud. I’m always keen on what I want to do and ambitious to reach my goals.
