The AoC Sport awards are the chance for member colleges from across the country to showcase and celebrate the achievements and inspirational work of students and staff in college sport. Despite the challenges faced in recent times, nominations for the awards were not affected. Nominations were still high and very competitive in all categories. All of the nominations showcased the best of the sport sector, celebrating the amazing work, dedication and achievements students and staff have accomplished this academic year.

The categories awarded this year included:

·         Hall of Fame (staff award)

·         Student Performer of the Year (student award)

·         Team of the Year (student award)

·         Student Volunteer of the Year (student award for colleges part of the leadership academy)

·         Inspirational Student of the Year (student award)

·         Achievement in Disability Sport (student award)

NewVIc Sports Academy Manager Beth Harris won the Hall of Fame award, NewVIc Cricket Academy won the Team of the Year award and the third award was won by Yahya Sheik-Hassan for Student Volunteer of the Year. Unfortunately due to government guidelines there was no formal presentation for the awards this year, but instead all awards were announced online.

Cricket Team Captain Haider Zaidi studying Sports Level 3, said:

It’s a real honour to be recognised as Highly Commended for the AoC Team of the Year award. I am really proud of the squad’s achievements, their hard work and dedication enabled us to perform at our very best. Our coach Scott Simmons always works tirelessly day in day out to ensure we are ready and prepared and the results we’ve had this year; it speaks for itself.

The annual awards represent the very best approaches that colleges are adopting to ensure that every student is regularly participating in sport or physical activity.

Former Sports Academy Manager Beth Harris added:

The NewVIc Sports Academy are thrilled to have been so successful in this year's AoC Sports Awards. This not only shows the strength in depth across the department for Performance, Participation & Staff, but also shows the NewVIc commitment to developing every student.

It's fantastic to see Yahya win the Student Volunteer of the Year Award knowing how committed he's been to football coaching, not only in the College but the local community too. Likewise despite not having an outdoor season the Cricket Academy being Highly Commended in the Team of the Year category. Their involvement in the sport goes far further than simply playing the game, being engaged across local schools & community leadership programmes.

After 11 years of working with AoC Sport, supporting the development and competition structures across London it has been lovely to be recognised and inducted into the AoC Sport Hall of Fame as I leave the College sector this year.

Long may these successes continue!
