The Pearson National Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers, founded in 1998 by Lord Puttnam to recognise the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher can have on the lives of the young people they teach.

Sports Academy Manager Beth Harris added:

It's been a long 10 year journey for the Sports Academy Team, working tirelessly to influence a change in attitudes across the entire staff and student body towards physical activity in FE. We're absolutely thrilled that the work we do, not only providing opportunities for every student to access extra curricular sport, but also working with curriculum departments across the college to educate and engage the students in relevant and interesting physical activity, has been recognised!

From competitive successes in traditional sports teams / academies, to running a full and inclusive Tackling Inactivity programme for those students previously disengaged, we've seen a huge impact on students' mental health, employability skills, college attendance, academic attainment and body image. Likewise the improvement in confidence we see in our student ambassadors and volunteers throughout their community engagement cannot be understated. We see every day the positive impact that physical activity can have on literally anyone in whatever form it takes. As a non curriculum department it was a huge surprise to reach the shortlist for this award and we're absolutely over the moon with the recognition. Thank you!
