NewVIc to commence gradual reopening from 15 June by invitation only

After careful planning, detailed risk assessment and subject to any further Government announcements Newham Sixth Form College plans a phased approach to commence onsite teaching, learning and assessment for students from Monday 15 June.

Online learning for all courses will continue throughout the phased reopening.  The College will contact individual staff and students to attend by invitation only and will have a greatly reduced maximum capacity in order to adhere to social distancing measures.

  • From Monday 15 June the College will invite students to attend one session to discuss progression and finalise their next courses.

  • The session will last for no more than 90 minutes.

  • Students will be allocated to small groups, where social distancing measures would apply.

  • The total number of students in the entire college would be limited to approximately 100 at any one time.

  • Enhanced cleaning and health and safety measures will be in place throughout the premises.

The College has sought to establish a Covid-19 safer site through a range of measures. Planning has been developed over a number of weeks and continues to follow Government and Public Health England guidance. Stringent onsite measures have been put in place to achieve social distancing, prominent signage is in place, staggered arrival times, additional cleaning capacity and staff to student ratios are greatly reduced from pre-Covid-19 levels. Seeking to minimise the risk of the Covid-19 virus to the health and wellbeing of students and staff has underpinned all aspects of the College’s planning which has been completed in consultation with staff and unions.

Principal and Chief Executive Mandeep Gill said “with Covid-19 safer measures in place we are delighted to be able to commence onsite contact with students. It’s important to us that none of our students are put at a disadvantage due to Covid-19 and that all our students complete their courses and achieve their ambitions. Monday 15 June is planned to be the first of, what is expected to be, a series of small steps towards opening our doors to all students sometime in the future. Further steps will only be taken when Government advice and College risk assessment allows. We will be keeping our plans under constant review and we will act swiftly should we need to make further changes”.

Online summer induction events for new students will be going ahead on 29 June and 30 June as planned. Potential students will have the opportunity to hear presentations, join live chat sessions and receive information on how to prepare for their new courses starting in September.

The events are open via invitation only. Students who have received offers from the College will be sent an invitation via post and email.
