Students Selected for Award Winning Future Leaders Programme
Seven talented NewVIc students have been awarded a place on the prestigious Future Leaders Programme out of 800 applicants for 225 places.
This year the programme received 800 applications for the 225 available places from Year 12 students in Redbridge, Waltham Forest, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Barking and Dagenham and Havering. This means only 28% of those who applied were awarded a place.
The Future Leaders Programme is an award-winning leadership programme for Year 12 students in Redbridge, Newham, Waltham Forest, Tower Hamlets and Barking and Dagenham and is supported by the Mayor of London and Queen Mary University of London.
The programme, which runs from November through to March 2022, will see students taking part in activities to develop their skills, confidence and aspirations. Selected students will join in weekly evening workshops where they will have sessions from university admission tutors on UCAS; take part in guest talks from changemakers who are working to make society more inclusive; be given work experience opportunities and will be paired with a current undergraduate student as a mentor. They will also go on a visit to the Houses of Parliament and the University of Oxford, where they will attend taster lectures and meet current students.
In summary, the programme will:
Help students from East London secure places at Russell Group universities
Provide students with work experience opportunities
Empower students to stand for equality, diversity and inclusion
Build resilience and encourage good mental health

This is such brilliant news! It’s great to see so many NewVIc students selected from 800 applicants for just 225 places. This programme will give our students access to opportunities they may not otherwise have, ultimately increasing their long term prosperity and life chances. Year on year, many NewVIc students progress onto Higher Education at Russell Group universities. We are absolutely delighted to be working with the Future Leaders Programme to help more and more young people to follow their aspirations and achieve their full potential.
