Foundation learning students rolled up their sleeves to get the party started in their new flat with a Christmas gathering for their peers and teachers.
Over the last few weeks students have been busy helping to set up their new independent living flat putting together flatpack furniture, bedding, cushions, kitchenware, displays shelves, lighting, artwork and Christmas decorations.
They utilised recycled materials from the sensory garden, which opened in the summer, as well as items students collected through their recycling project last month. Students worked in groups to create various decorations for use in the flat for their Christmas party they organised to officially open the flat to their peers and staff.
Through the new flat, the college aims to continue to develop students’ independence. Whether this includes learning to master and self-manage some everyday tasks such as practical living skills, learning to be an independent traveller, shopping, learning to be safe or preparing to progress to sheltered, supported or independent living. The new flat will be an added bonus for students to have the opportunity to experience this flat, which includes a fully equipped kitchen, bedroom, living and lounge area.

“I’m really impressed with the flat and how it has all come together with things we made, built and put together as a class. I enjoyed using recycled materials to make decorations for the Christmas party and put food items nicely in the flat. It looks lovely and I had fun with my friends at the party!”
