More than 100 Year 10 and 11 students from Newham came together to battle it out, for the third year in a row, to be crowned the best basketball players in Newham. Players from six Newham secondary schools (Rokeby School, Eastlea Community School, Brampton Manor Academy, Lister Community School, St Bonaventure’s and London Design and Engineering UTC) took part.
Lister Community School were crowned winners of NewVIc’s inter-school basketball competition ‘Clash of Newham’ 2024/2025. The winning team were presented with a shield by Charles Vuong, NewVIc Head of Performance and Development Basketball Academy. The best player of the team went to Year 10 student Yanai, also from Lister Community School.
NewVIc has a long history of Basketball Academy players who have progressed from the competition to NewVIc and continue to play basketball alongside their studies, giving them the opportunity to play at elite level under the expert coaching of Charles Vuong.
Yanai, Year 10 student from Lister Community School, said:
"It’s an honour to be a part of the ‘Clash of Newham’, knowing what this means to my school and for myself. We have not won against or played against big teams like St Bon’s. Many people thought we were not good enough but we showed them all by winning! On top of that, to be named MVP is a big, big honour for me.”
Kajus, Year 10 student from Lister Community School, added:
“Clash of Newham helped Lister School gain recognition by winning against the big known teams like St Bon’s and Rokeby School. We worked really hard as a team to beat the odds and win the whole thing.”
Michael Old, Basketball Head Coach for Lister Community School, commented:
“The NewVIc ‘Clash of Newham’ is a great sporting event which allows young players to experience competing against strong opposition from across the borough. Including schools in events like this allows the students to interact with other players and showcase sportsmanship, outside of their normal surroundings.
Winning the title this year is a massive step for Lister Community School on the road to establishing the school as a hub for basketball within Newham and the development of the team over the last year has been incredible to watch. Last year losing to Rokeby in the semi-finals gave our team a goal, allowing them to bond and grow whilst also using basketball as a tool to drive academic improvement alongside sporting excellence.”
