PROGRESS TUTOR FOR BUSINESS AND TRAVEL

On work-life:

“My role as a Progress Tutor supports Business and Travel curriculum students. I monitor their attendance, have regular 121s, checking in on them and their wellbeing. I am really passionate about improving the lives of our young people, and in my role, I am fortunate enough to help shape a students' mindset by supporting them with anything whilst they are with us. It is great to see my students taking pride in themselves, enjoying their learning, and growing in confidence throughout their time at college.

I love working at NewVIc. I admire our students and how far they can be stretched. I enjoy working with the young people of Newham and beyond, supporting them as a Progress Tutor, helping them work through their problems and understanding their area of study further. I love the fact that at NewVIc my colleagues teach by not giving the answer, but by empowering students to find the answer themselves. My role comes into effect here, explaining, making the path a little simpler, but not too easy so they can continue to make progress with their studies.”

“Excellent teaching is instantly recognisable. You know it because you can see how your students are awakened from within, with what they knew previously and by learning something new.”

On the most inspiring person you have met:

“I haven’t met him (I wish I had!) but he is a name taught in every science class the world over; Sir Isaac Newton has inspired me since I learned about him. Undoubtedly one of the most inspirational people to have ever lived. Accomplished in the fields of mathematics, theology, physics and astronomy; his radical thinking resulted in ground-breaking discoveries and caused waves among the contemporary science community for generations.”

On your NewVIc career:

“Before working at NewVIc, I lived and studied in Morrocco. At 18, I decided to move to England by myself. It was a very daunting move for me all by myself with no support network, but I am glad I did.

Whilst in England I worked hard to support myself as I pursued a degree at Metropolitan Cardiff University and have recently completed a Masters Degree at Anglia Ruskin University in International Business.

I started my career at NewVIc as a Learning Support Practitioner working with young people with educational needs. From there I moved to the role of a Progress Tutor, encouraging qualities such as being dedicated, organised, enquiring and social to be developed as well as supporting students in building their confidence, teamwork, communication and leadership skills. I have enjoyed my time at NewVIc so far and look forward to meeting more young people over the next few years and supporting them to achieve their ambitions!

Outside of NewVIc, I am working on my own private travel agency to lead groups of tourists, showing them the real Morocco, the real experience and going to places off the beaten track to enjoy authentic food, hospitality and culture. I am looking forward to developing this project and getting this started soon, so watch this space!”

On the benefits of NewVIc students having a Progress Tutor:

“The Progress Tutor team are amazing and I feel very privileged to be a part of this fantastic team.

Every student is allocated a Progress Tutor who meets with them weekly to provide guidance and support. We help students set targets and stay on track to achieve them. We also provide student references and help them to apply for university, further training and jobs.

Many of our students make great progress onto their next steps and achieve well, as well as developing invaluable skills for the world of business and travel and life in general.”

Ismail hopes to run a private tour business back in his home country of Morocco showing people the real Morocco that they won’t forget!
