NewVIc student Syed Maaiz has received an offer to study Physics at Imperial College London, the only university in the UK to focus exclusively on science, medicine, engineering and business. He is predicted to achieve grades of A*A*A* in the summer. Syed Maaiz is the youngest child in his family to be going to a top research-led university ranked at 8th place in the world.

Syed Maaiz is in his final year studying A Levels in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology. Alongside his A Levels, Syed Maaiz also took part in many unique opportunities available to students. These included a collaborative research project on cosmic rays organised by Queen Mary University. His group presented their research live online and got selected as prize winners for their work. Syed Maaiz also took part in the Scholars Programme with The Brilliant Club which looked at DNA sequencing.

Syed Maaiz, A Level student, said:

"I am beside myself with joy! The idea of studying at such a prestigious university is really exciting. My parents and siblings are so delighted with the news. Being the youngest amongst the four siblings, there were lots of high hopes for me and they are proud to know that I had gotten this offer. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all interviews were cancelled and Imperial were offering students places based on their personal statement that had been provided. Thanks to NewVIc and the support of teachers like Karen, Carina, Marcel and David I was able to write the best statement I could. I am very fortunate to have been given a place out of all the applications that have been made.

Although it was tough going, it was definitely a character building experience. The support I received from NewVIc has been phenomenal, making it possible for me to get through those trials and securing a place with Imperial, I can’t thank everyone enough.”

Curriculum Manager Karen, Honours Programme Manager Carina, Physics and Maths teachers Marcel and David were all a huge support during the entire process of Syed Maaiz’s application.

Carina Ancell, Honours Programme Manager and Teacher of History, added:

“Syed Maaiz is very fortunate to be accepted by Imperial College London that many other ambitious young people like him apply to but only a few get selected. I enjoyed supporting Syed Maaiz with his personal statement support sessions. It ensured that he did not make the smallest of mistakes in his drafts and made sure that the statement reflected him and his potential. The support sessions we offer at NewVIc breaks down what students can expect, and how best they can prepare for them. Being an Oxford University alumni myself, I have been able to pass on my knowledge and experience to the students directly which has benefitted them all. We are very proud of Syed Maaiz.”
