NewVIc performing arts students take their work on tour in Newham!

Second year performing arts students have had the chance to find out how it feels to be a teacher. They have spent the term studying and developing skills in theatre facilitation and devising an original new drama performance aimed at year 10 students.

Alongside this performance they have also planned and structured a 90 minute drama workshop. Students have taken responsibility for liaising with schools and drama teachers, planning risk assessments and organising their own sound and costumes. The project aims to give students a chance to work in a professional setting outside college.

All the planning and preparations were finally put to the test when they spent a week offsite delivering performances and workshops to over 100 year 10 GCSE drama pupils in different local schools. Pupils were impressed with the highly physical and dynamic performance and they enjoyed working alongside NewVIc students in the workshop.

Amanda Dawson, Head of Drama at Plashet School, said:

‘What a fabulous bunch of talent. If this is the future of theatre then I am very happy. The performance was of a high standard with a variety of drama techniques beautifully put together and powerfully performed. The workshop was pacey and nicely crafted. The NewVIc students worked sensitively and confidently with the year 10 students and produced work that was, frankly, nothing short of a miracle’.

A pupil from Kingsford School, added:

‘It was a really fun workshop and I learnt a lot of new techniques. I really like creating tableauxs with the NewVIc students and performing our work back at the end’.

NewVIc student Reece, said:

‘I found that this project was extremely useful for myself as I hope to work with young people and carry out my own workshops in future! I learnt lots of terminology and techniques. I also learnt how to make connections with different institutions to gain access to different target groups.’

NewVIc student Tylor, added:

I really enjoyed this project. I’ve learnt how to fully plan, build and deliver a workshop and also how to be confident in presenting which helped with interacting with the students. The school students really enjoyed it and it was impressive seeing them take the information we were giving them and using it to make a piece’.
