NewVIc Honours student Madhavan has received an offer to study Medicine at Anglia Ruskin University. Madhavan will be studying Medicine at the university’s Chelmsford campus. He is predicted to achieve grades of A*A*A in the summer. Madhavan is the first child and the eldest in his family to be going to one of the top 40 universities in the UK. Anglia Ruskin University is also recognised as one of the top 350 universities in the world. He hopes to pursue a medical career as a physician to better the lives of the masses.

Madhavan is in his final year studying A Levels in Maths, Chemistry and Biology. He also enrolled on the college’s Honours Programme for gifted and talented students which aim to support students with high academic potential from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds, by inspiring and engaging them in challenging topics often only taught in private schools.

With the support of NewVIc, Madhavan’s peer Craig secured a partnership with Eton College last year which he took part in. He has also been involved in many unique opportunities available to students. These included The Scholars Programme with The Brilliant Club which looked at DNA sequencing and the EtonX writing and communication skills programme with Eton College.

Madhavan, Honours and A Level student, said:

“I am so excited about studying Medicine at Anglia Ruskin University. They have a wide and varied amount of clinical experience as well as a very modern institution with cutting-edge medical technology. It will be a great step towards realising my career goal. My parents are really proud of me and have taught me to always give it my best effort and nothing less.

The admission process into Medicine has really taught me the lesson that hard work and commitment always prevail. I dedicated a lot of my time to prepare for the UCAT medical entrance exam required for Anglia Ruskin. I spent most of my Christmas holiday on interview preparation with my good friend who studies at Eton College. He helped keep me on track and inspired me with his own journey. Having the right friends around me has benefited me right from the start. I have friends that are all very ambitious, working towards a goal, young people who challenge and support you to go above what is expected of you. Together we have all pushed each other to where we are today.

I received great support from NewVIc throughout, especially from Carina, Karen and Jo. Even though we have had very minimal face to face interactions due to the lockdowns, they still supported me throughout the entire process, whether it was arranging online work experience or conducting MMI Stations with professionals at the Medic Portal. My Biology teacher Dauda was another great source of support, inspiring me and the rest of my peers to work independently to achieve the best possible grades.I am so grateful to all of them.”

Carina Ancell, Honours Programme Manager and Teacher of History, added:

“Madhavan is an outstanding student who has excelled academically and we are so proud that he has achieved a place to study Medicine at Anglia Ruskin University. He has participated in several super curricular programmes at NewVIc, including the Brilliant Club Scholar's Programme, where he took part in tutorials with a Phd supervisor and wrote a rigorous research project on a scientific topic. He also attended interview workshops to help prepare him for the Multiple MMI interviews and received some really positive feedback. He has a mature and positive approach to his studies and has provided academic support for his peers. We think Madhavan has an excellent future ahead of him and are so pleased for him.”
