Abbies Driving School, a well known household name in Newham and Newham College London and NewVIc (Newham Sixth Form Centre) have come together to help students improve their knowledge of driving safety and prepare for their driving theory tests.

Research shows that inexperience puts younger drivers at high risk and less likely to spot hazards. This exciting partnership with Abbies Driving School, which launched in January, aims to change that. The year-long programme aims to equip young people with the skills to drive safely by providing enhanced road safety awareness. Students will also be helped to prepare for the theory exam and explore general car maintenance at the same time. Sessions, which run twice a week and are open to all NewVIc Sixth Form Centre students.

This unique programme has been designed by Ismail Mulla, Abbies Driving School Manager and NewVIc Alumni. Ismail studied Level 3 BTEC Business at NewVIc and progressed to study at Centre of Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence (CEME), funded by Ford Motors, before managing Abbies Driving School.

The programme has now been rolled out to include other campuses across Newham College London, of which NewVIc Sixth Form Centre is now a part.

Ismail Mulla, Abbies Driving School Manager said:

“This project is an exciting opportunity for students to gain more knowledge and become road aware. The UK has some of the safest roads in the world, but through this partnership we want to continue to look at ways of making them safer - by educating young people.

We want to equip young people with the skills and knowledge they need to do well in the official DVSA car or motorcycle theory test and driving lessons.

We are really excited to be working with NewVIc and Newham College London as a whole, helping more and more young people be better drivers of the future.”

Naomi Mullings, Student Development Manager, NewVIc added:

“We are delighted to have partnered with Abbies Driving School. This is a great partnership that supports our students in the pursuit to becoming a safe future driver but also understanding the importance of road safety. Abbies has an inclusive approach and will look to also deliver future road safety sessions to our entry level students. We look forward to continuing to work with Abbie’s in the next academic year.”
