On Tuesday 6 February, St Bonaventure's School were crowned the winners of Newham Sixth Form Colleges (NewVIc) 5 v 5 inter school basketball competition ‘Clash of Newham 2024.’

92 Year 10 students from across nine Newham secondary schools (London Design and Engineering UTC, Langdon Academy, Eko Pathways, St Bonaventure’s, Brampton Manor Academy, Bobby Moore Academy, Rokeby School, Cumberland Community School and Lister Community School) took part in the fiercely contested competition. Teams of five competed against each other during the day-long event organised by the NewVIc Sports Academy team.

The event, now in its second year, originally started with just four Newham secondary schools taking part. And this year, due to its popularity, nine schools participated in the tournament. The winning team were presented with a shield by Charles Vuong, NewVIc Head of Performance and Development Basketball Academy.

Charles said:

“This year’s tournament has been fantastic. I’m delighted that the concept which we came up with 2 years ago has gone from strength to strength.

The event aims to give all kids in Newham who are passionate about basketball a chance to gain competition experience. It also aims to raise the profile of NewVIc Knights, our extremely successful Basketball academy.

We ran a tournament for Year 11s in November and these players are then invited to our October half term camp. Next year we hope to launch a competition for girls; helping us to achieve our ambition of being as inclusive as possible.”
