NewVIc sports teams excel to The AoC National Finals for 8th year running
14 NewVIc student medals at The AoC Sport London Regional Championships in cricket, badminton, table tennis and golf.
NewVIc’s sports teams have had an impressive start to this academic year, with the Cricket Academy beating teams from Newham College, Leyton and Barking and Dagenham to name a few to convincingly winning the AoC Indoor Regional Cricket Championships. They are now on their way to Nottingham to compete at National Finals for the fourth year, coming 2nd in the country on the last two occasions! The AoC regional tournaments are open to students in AoC Sport member colleges and are held in the autumn term. The top teams and individuals in 12 sports qualify for the AoC Sport National Championships, where they compete for both their college and their region.
On the success of the Men’s Cricket Academy, NewVIc has also launched a Women’s Cricket Academy with Essex County Cricket, offering keen students the opportunity to play and develop in the game. The Women’s Cricket Academy also offers a full coaching pathway with support in achieving Cricket Activator, Cricket Leaders, Foundation 1 and Foundation 2 Coaching courses.
It is the first time the College had a golfer (since 2013), female table tennis player and female badminton players. The championships will take place from 24 – 26 April 2020 at Nottingham University with over 2,000 students from Colleges across the country competing across 12 different sports, including badminton, 7-a-side football, volleyball and indoor cricket.
This is the biggest competitive game I’ve been involved in so far. I have always been competitive in golf since I was 7 years old. I can’t believe that I came 2nd from the regional competition. I am training hard, at least 2-3 times a week alongside my studies which are equally important. I can’t wait and hope to win at the nationals!

NewVIc is already a very successful college with one of the highest sports participation rates in the country with 59% of our students taking part in some kind of sport or physical activity on 1 or more occasions. All of these achievements have required a lot of commitment and hard work from the NewVIc Sports Academy team and dedicated students that take up the opportunities available to them.
We are beyond thrilled to once again have so many students selected to represent London at the AoC Sport National Championships in April. This is the fourth year running our Cricket Academy players have won the Regional Tournament, going on to represent the Capital and we’ll once again be vying for a position near the top of the table having come 2nd in the entire country on the last two occasions. We can’t wait to get back to Nottingham, put some demons to rest and show exactly why we are well renowned for our history of excellence!
