Enamul Haque Jr
Head of Performance and Development and Sports Coach (NewVIc cricket Academy)
On work-life:
“I have been playing cricket professionally as a career for more than 22 years now. I was part of the Bangladesh national team playing for the Sylhet Division CC and Chattogram Challengers. I am nearing the end of my professional career as a player in the sport and have started to work in developing aspiring athletes into cricket.
I relocated to England from Bangladesh and worked with the likes of London Eagles Cricket Club and another academy in London. At the end of this summer, the opportunity came up to join NewVIc. I thought coaching would be the next challenge for me so I applied and got the position.
I am really enjoying working with the students here at NewVIc. The staff and students here are very keen to improve their game and have the drive to do so. That is the most satisfying aspect of my role, seeing new talent develop to elite level.”
“Giving NewVIc students the skills and opportunities and inspiring them to flourish to become professional athletes.”
On the most inspiring person you have met:
“I have been very fortunate to play against international cricket player, Sachin Tendulkar, who also captained the Indian national team. I was lucky to bat him in the India vs Bangladesh in the Cricket World Cup a few years back. What a match that was, he inspires me a lot. He is now retired.”
On your cricket career:
“My coaching journey started after I completed my Level 2 coaching qualification in Bangladesh. I worked with Sylhet Division First Class Team and Chattogram Challengers Franchise Team playing in the Bangladesh Premier League.
When I moved to England I joined London Eagles CC, then Roehampton CC and Roding Valley CC. Having all of these opportunities have made me who I am today. Now I am running a program here at NewVIc where I wish to see determined students flourish and continue to grow interest in cricket at the college.”
On student performance and development through cricket:
“This academic year we have started amazingly. My very first cricket tournament at NewVIc was the Association of Colleges (AoC) regional tournament which we won! We have now qualified for the AoC National Championships which is being held in Nottingham University later this year, where we are representing not only NewVIc but also London. Seven of our cricket players have trials for Essex County Cricket and we’re hoping a few of them will get selected for their elite program. Being a coach is not only having the responsibility of teaching the game to these students but more importantly making sure athletes are developing both good attitudes and skills that help them in life. Being a professional player myself, I share my experiences with students and have shared videos of my matches at international games which they watch and come back to me with comments on my playmanship, and I love that.”
