What made you choose NewVIc?
I went past the college everyday on the bus when I first moved to London. I remember seeing so many young people from the window of the bus, they all looked so happy. I started wondering that this should be a good environment for me to also study here. It looked very welcoming and friendly. I was impressed.
I heard lots of positive feedback about the college. I did my own research on the internet about NewVIc and came to the open day. I loved everything I saw and learnt lots from students and staff I spoke to. I also chose the college because of the way it looked, totally different from the buildings that I was used to seeing in Italy. It reminded me of an ''American college'' as you see in the movies.
How have you found sixth form so far?
I have loved studying at NewVIc so far. I was able to choose the subjects I enjoyed doing, something that was so new to me as in Italy we had to study 10 subjects! I love the way the learning is structured at NewVIc and the fact that there is a university-style learning space and library onsite. The environment in this sixth form is very friendly and lively. Teachers are very helpful and supportive, I really appreciate the fact that I always got the help whenever I needed it. This matters and I will miss this college very much.
Tell us about some of the projects you have been involved in at the college?
I am involved in the Honours Programme, Life Not Knife Campaign, the National Trust, Women in Leadership, and Well-Being Mental Health Campaign. Taking part in all of these projects and learning from these experiences I have developed so many useful skills that are helping me everyday and throughout my time at NewVIc. I am sure the skills I’ve learnt and developed will also help in my future after college.
Whilst working on the Life Not Knife Campaign I got interviewed by the BBC, The Guardian, the Newham Recorder and the Financial Times. My confidence has grown so much since then as I spoke to so many different people and in public on national media. My communication skills have been enhanced through all of these projects along with my teamworking skills.
Is there anything you wish you had known that you do now?
I didn’t know the extent to how much extra-curricular activities was available for students to get involved in with. There is so much on offer, definitely something of interest for everybody.
Who is the most inspiring person you have ever met?
The most inspiring person I saw is Michelle Obama. I was able to see her thanks to my teacher Emma Wood, who chose me out of many students to be part of the Women in Leadership Project we held at the college. Michelle Obama did so much for people, not for the fame, but because of the role she had. She knew that she would have the power to make real changes for the people in need.
Considering the women that have a ''name'' and ''an importance in society'', in my opinion Michelle Obama is and will be the one of those inspiring people that made the most of her status. I loved the way she spoke and her mannerism. Michelle’s book ''Becoming'' really motivates you to fight for your dreams and most importantly for your rights, especially if you are a woman, or from a different background.
What is your advice for students considering NewVIc?
If you’re a motivated and hard working student then this is the best college for you. You will be rewarded with offers on incredible and unforgettable opportunities, that will help you personally and help in your future as you can put what you did and learnt on your personal statement for university applications, or on your CV when looking for work. If you need help, the staff at NewVIc will try to help and support you, you do not have to be scared to ask for help. NewVIc offers a lot of extra-curricular activities for you to get involved with, such as sports, creative writing, dance and performing. You will get to learn new things and make friends with people from all around the world. Choose NewVIc like I did, you will not regret it!
So what’s next?
I have applied for university and apprenticeships. I would like the freedom to see which option will be better for me and which one will help me more to achieve my life goals, and eventually my dream to become a businesswoman. I love studying Finance and Business, and I would like to inspire other girls to fight for their dreams. I want to change the stereotype that only men can lead or represent a business. I can too. I have received some exciting offers from both university and apprenticeships so let’s see.
