BBC's Six O'Clock News interviews former NewVIc student Balwinder Kaur

NewVIc student interviewed by BBC

Former student Balwinder Kaur successfully completed her Business BTEC level 3 studies this year and was interviewed by the BBC about her views on apprenticeship, which was aired on Thursday 23 November. Currently in an apprenticeship at British Telecom, she talked confidently about the positive points about the apprenticeship route and her experience of convincing her parents that apprenticeships are a good alternative to university.

Hundreds of new Standards apprenticeships are organised by a large number of government-approved training companies, offering opportunities in range of areas from engineering, customer service to communications. These are significantly different to the former traditional Framework apprenticeships.

British Telecom hired 2200 apprentices this year alone and according to Balwinder “Over 20 thousand people apply for BT apprenticeships yearly”. No stranger to work placements, NewVIc’s Work Related Curriculum Adviser, Jane Nugent, said ‘Balwinder undertook a work experience placement as part of her studies at NewVIc, giving her first-hand experience of what an employer looks for, building her confidence to apply after college for an apprenticeship’’

Isa Ijale, Programme Team Manager for Tourism and Sports and a former Business teacher, said “I feel what made Balwinder a successful candidate was her excellent attendance at college which demonstrated her serious attitude towards her learning, also she was a member of so many out of curriculum activities including the college's student council, debating society and was the spokesperson for the student commission. These have all equipped her with a vast range of work-related skills including leadership, team building, negotiation, and creative skills”

The 2018 Apprentice campaign is now open for applications, students can find more information on BT’s ‘How to apply’ page; Contact your tutor for more information.
