NewVIc celebrates an increase in pass rates and top grades
Students and staff at one of London’s largest sixth form colleges are celebrating another year of improvement in A-level pass rates and top grades.
The college’s A-level pass rates are up by 1% on last year with 97% of A-level candidates passing. The number of candidates achieving the highest possible A* grade is also up to 25 from 20 last year with 8 of these in Maths and 8 in Sociology. Students in 25 A-level subjects achieved 100% pass rates compared to 20 last year.
NewVIc’s advanced vocational students have also excelled this year with an overall pass rate also at 97%. Nearly 20% of students achieved a triple distinction star (D*D*D*), the highest possible grade in the level 3 extended diploma. Nearly half of all candidates achieved at least a triple Distinction – a big increase on last year.

NewVIc’s principal, Eddie Playfair said: “NewVIc has been helping young people succeed for a quarter of a century and continues to improve year on year. These results mean that many hundreds of young east Londoners will be able to realise their ambitions and progress to the university degree course of their choice. This shows that excellence can be achieved within a comprehensive college which is there for everyone. Our wonderful students and staff have worked extremely hard for these results and their success is well deserved. It shows that we are truly a successful learning community, living our commitment to ambition, challenge and equality.”
NewVIc sends more students from disadvantaged backgrounds to university than any other sixth form provider in England and the college is confident that it will be able to build on its success last year with 770 students progressing to university and 90 to Russell group universities.
