Grand opening of NewVIc’s new building

Cllr Unmesh Desai AM and Eddie Playfair

On 30 June Cllr Unmesh Desai AM officially opened NewVIc’s new building on Prince Regent Lane. The £10million addition to the college campus houses a university-style new library, theatre, reception area and café. Newham councillors and former students attended the unveiling of a commemorative plaque on Friday 30th June. Among the 70 notable guests who attended the ceremony was Fred Jarvis CBE who studied at the NewVIc  site over 80 years ago.

Lauren Kaur Dhamu

The packed programme included musical performances from former student Lauren Kaur Dhamu, tours of the new Learning Resource Centre and art show. College Principal, Eddie Playfair welcomed and hosted the event where speakers included Charles Dokk-Olsen from Shepheard Epstein Hunter, the architects responsible for the design and Fred Jenson from the lead contractors, Interserve.

Cllr Unmesh Desai, AM praised the workmanship of the exterior and interior of the LRC, highlighted his personal feelings about the occasion:  “For me today is about recognising hard work of everyone involved in NewVIc’s 25 years, the staff, the governors and the students. This building is a fitting tribute to their collective efforts.’’

Fred Jarvis

Fred Jarvis provided a link with the educational history of the NewVIc site by recounting his experiences at Plaistow Grammar school which occupied NewVIc’s current ‘A’ block.  Fred spoke positively about his time studying there, but remembered that “the number of students who went from school onto university could be counted on one hand” compared to the many hundreds who progress to university from NewVIc every year. He spoke warmly about the college’s vision and its ambitions for students.

Speaking about the huge range of courses and careers catered for at the college, Fred said "very few can offer the variety of opportunities that NewVIc can, they are just out of this world"

Guests socialising on the opening

The afternoon finished off with guests socialising together in the new reception. Food provided by MaziMas, a catering company founded to help women gain independence.

Eddie Playfair said: ‘’This is just the start of NewVIc’s 25th Anniversary year, with a number of events planned over next academic year to celebrate the college’s track record of success and service to our community.”
