NewVIc students praised for their role in United Nation’s meeting to free Trump
Nine students from NewVIc participated in the Warwick Model United Nations Conference between the 10 - 12 February 2017 at Warwick University. Three NewVIc students were presented with awards at the closing ceremony.
Anastasija Aleksandrova and Kier Sharp received Honourable Mentions and Ameera Ayan Ismail was presented with the Highly Commendable Award. Acting as delegates of Russia, Israel, Vietnam and Japan, they debated and negotiated from their country’s perspective on a range of issues in their committees (Economic and Social, Disarmament and United Nations Security Council). Topics discussed ranged from arms sales to the crisis in Yemen.
The President of the Warwick MUN Society, Paulietis Darius Stasiulevičius said: “Having the ability and stamina to compete at a university level is something to be very proud of. I congratulate the students on their effort”.
NewVIc Principal Eddie Playfair said: “I’m immensely proud of our students, who participated enthusiastically in this event and debated, negotiated and made tough decisions under pressure. I think these kinds of experiences prepare our students well for global citizenship, teamwork and university study.”
A highlight of the conference was the ‘Urgent Crisis Meeting’ a scenario which was set up following the (fake) news that the President Donald Trump had been kidnapped by an extremist group. Delegates worked together with the added pressure of constant updates including news that the president was being dangled from the top of Trump Tower and that the kidnappers were offering him to the highest bidder.
The United States representative confirmed that ‘The United States does not negotiate with terrorists’ and warned of possible repercussions. As the scenario unfolded, the prospects for president Trump worsened and the final update concluded that Mike Pence had been inaugurated as President.
