NewVIc‘s students inspired by Medical Mavericks

NewVIc students use an ultrasound with Tom Warrender from Medical Mavericks

Science and technology students were treated to sessions run by Medical Mavericks, an organisation who inspire young people to get involved in Science and STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) by putting on exciting practical activities such as portable ultrasound scanning, lung capacity tests, and retinal scanning using an iPhone. There was time spent showing them the range of amazing careers that studying these subjects can lead to.

Khosboe Sahar having her retin scanned with an iPhoneProgramme Team Manager, Karen Flanagan, says: “These sessions are fabulous for the students, as they get hands-on experience of equipment that is used for physiological testing in hospitals. This is relevant both to their courses and to their career aspirations.”

Tom Warrender from Medical Mavericks says: “We are opening the door to the world around the young people we see, just enough so they can get a tantalising taste that will drive their ambition and inspire them to find out more.”

Student Khosboe Sahar (studying BTEC Level 3 Science) says: “I’m really enjoying today, the activities really bring science to life and show you how the theory works in practice.”

NewVIc’s next open day is on Saturday 4 February (9.30 – 12.30).
