NewVIc student lands a Cambridge offer
NewVIc Honours Programme student, Mughees Hassan, 18, has landed an ‘open offer’ at the University of Cambridge.
Mughees, who is studying for A levels in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths has already achieved a coveted A* grade in his extended project on the impact of addictive internet gaming on children and young people. The offer from Cambridge for Natural Sciences will allow him to specialise in Physics and could be from any one of Cambridge’s prestigious colleges.
The support Mughees has received from NewVIc has helped him secure this offer. Being on the college’s Honours Programme means that students have access to interview preparation and a wide range of extra-curricular activities which are so useful to securing a place at a highly selective university.
Mughees says: “I have always had my sights set on Cambridge. I even moved to London from Ireland where my family live to ensure I had a better chance of getting in. I am part of the debating society, the chess club, maths club and I also play football at college.
“I get such satisfaction from problem solving, and enjoy studying at home too. I have prepared carefully for my next step, and the fact that I need to secure A*, A* and A grades in my exams results doesn’t seem such a challenge when I have worked so hard for the past 2 years. My ultimate aim is to become a researcher – perhaps in Quantum Physics.”
Principal Eddie Playfair said: “We are all delighted for Mughees. Securing this offer is the realisation of a dream for him. He is a real pleasure to work with and it is wonderful to see how studying at NewVIc has helped him grow his determination and enjoyment of learning. I am sure he is destined for a brilliant career in Physics.”
