Living together in peace - Kaufmännische Schulen visits NewVIc
To celebrate a partnership with the Kaufmännische Schulen lasting over 20 years, New VIc welcomed 18 students and three teachers from this educational institute in Rheine, Germany. German guests collaborated with students of AS and A2 Level German, Health and Social Care, Archaeology, Anthropology and Sociology on the prestigious ‘European Competition’ which takes place annually among colleges in Germany.
This year’s motto was ‘Living together in peace’, a topic of great significance given the current political climate. Guided by Christine Khakhar, Teacher of German and French, and with the enthusiastic support of Moyra Samuels, Teacher of Childcare, NewVIc students quickly got to work with our partners and enjoyed preparing presentations for the grand finale on Tuesday.
As 2016 is the ‘European year against violence towards women’, the teams investigated topics around women’s rights, violence and what it means to be European. They presented well-researched issues and quizzed the audience, produced films taking starring roles (Tharjith Sendilnathan was unforgettable as a newsreader), they designed a three dimensional picture book and brought the two-day workshops to a close with a rousing, self-composed peace song, written by Shakirat Okunade.
Oliver Howard summed it up: “We feel proud to be able to put together proper presentations, and there was such good cooperation with our German partners”. It was not only work, on Monday evening we showed our visitors East Ham, the parts of London other tourists don’t see, and ended an exciting day in Europe’s largest shopping centre in Stratford. On Tuesday, we explored the Docklands, flying over the Thames in the cable car and enjoyed food from around the world in the Millennium Dome”.
As our A-level German students put it: “The two days we worked together were such a success and we had such fun together”.
We now hope for a return visit to meet our friends in Rheine and continue our partnership for many more years to come.
Congratulations to our partner college, the Kaufmaennische Schulen Rheine, for finishing third in the largest student competition in Germany for this workshop they did together with us at NewVIc in November 2015. Read more on the Kaufmaennische Schulen Rheine website (in German).
