Did you know the human body is made up of trillions of cells? The study of Biology will give you an insight into the makeup of living organisms. You will explore ecology, human health, disease and genetics and apply your knowledge in practical work.
The study of life itself, A Level Biology explores the theories and principles involved in living systems, in all their intricate beauty. Topics you will learn about include: lifestyle, transport, genes and health, development, plants and the environment, the natural environment and species survival, energy, exercise and co-ordination, as well as practical biology and research skills. By the end of the course you will know about the principles of genetics, molecules, taxonomy, natural selection, evolutionary theory, global warming, bacteria and viruses, and more.

This course can be taken as part of an A Level programme.
If you wish to study medicine, dentistry, optometry, physiotherapy or other medicine-related degrees at university, you will need a high grade at A Level Biology.
We recommend that students choose three A Levels or a combination of Level 3 Extended Certificates and A Levels. Depending on your GCSE grades and long-term destination, some students may be able to take up to four A Levels.
If you are planning on progressing to university, the majority of university courses do not require specific subjects. Most universities prefer that you are able to demonstrate skills and competence via the successful completion of related courses. Therefore we recommend that the most important thing when choosing course combinations is that you choose a range of subjects that your enjoy and excel in.
We do not recommend that your take two courses that are similar to each other in content.

If you are planning on studying Medicine, Veterinary Science, Dentistry or other competitive science based courses, most universities require you to take Biology, Chemistry and either Maths, Statistics or Physics.

A level Biology is a highly respected academic A level and it makes an excellent choice, offering you access to a wide range of university courses and careers. You'll need biology for most degrees in medicine, biology, biomedical sciences, dentistry, dietetics, physiotherapy, orthoptics and veterinary medicine. Biology is usually required or recommended for courses in biochemistry, environmental science, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, sports science, physiology and speech therapy.
If you wish to study medicine, dentistry, optometry, physiotherapy or other medicine-related degrees at university, you will need a high grade at A Level Biology.
